Baloo’s Blog – from Ginger Lindsey

Hello! My Name is Baloo! I am a Skye Terrier puppy and I live in central North Carolina which is in the United States. I am writing this blog so that you may share in my adventures during my 1st year of life.

Today began like no other! These two odd people arrived at my home in Finland. They spoke a funny language. Then they insisted on holding me. Me! Of all the dogs to hold, they chose me! I squirmed and tried to get away but they held on! It was awful! No one heard my cries for help!

That night, my human mother and her hubby drove me with these two oddballs to a hotel that used to be a prison. And they abandoned me there!  Oh, and the key words here are “used to be”.  The Hotel Katajanokka is still a prison as far as I am concerned! I was put into an isolation cell away from my mother, brothers, numerous aunts and uncles and, of course, my human parents. The only good thing to come of it was that my wardens, the same ones who came out to my home to arrest me, had taken a liking to me. They gave me all sorts of special treats and tasty food. Better than to be expected in most prisons. And they gave me a newspaper, too, only I wasn’t expected to read it.

Here it gets really interesting. My keepers stuffed me into a dark bag and smuggled me onto an airplane.  Then I got shoved up under a seat for over 8 hours! The prison felt like deluxe accommodations compared to these cramped quarters. Eventually we landed in a place called New York City. It was crowded and noisy and a bit scary.  My keepers finally let me see daylight. They offered me a bit of water and a chance to stretch my legs.  I guess all prisoners are allowed some exercise. Thankfully!

My new freedom was short lived. I got stuffed back in the smuggler’s bag. Then my keepers tried to get on another airplane but it left without them.  We ended up in a hotel for the night. Oh, and get this: My keepers finally explained that they were adopting me! And I was expected to call them “Mommy” and “Daddy”. Okay, anything for a lighter sentence!

That night, you should have seen my new Daddy getting us checked into the hotel.  The hotel didn’t really want me there! Just because I have 4 legs instead of two! But I was getting really restless! I had been in this bag for way too long!  So, I wiggled and jiggled in my bag as my new Mommy hid me behind a pillar in the hotel lobby.  Success! We got a room!

By now, it was close to midnight and I had not eaten since breakfast.  So, my keepers…”Mommy and Daddy”, went down to the hotel grill and got something to eat. $20 a pop for sandwiches!  And half of everything they got they gave to me! So, I ate well that night…parmesan chicken and Angus beef.  My other food and dinner dishes had flown out on the plane that Mommy and Daddy had missed. So, it was a good thing that they remembered I was still hungry!

We got up early to catch a flight to Raleigh, NC. That is where my new parents live.  And yes, I got stuffed back into that awful bag again! But this time, it was only for a short trip!

When we landed, my parents’ son met us and drove us to their house. I was ready to play, but my parents were not up to too much playing. Instead, they mostly wanted to sleep!  What a let down!

So, here I am, in a strange country, with people I don’t even know!

I got to go to a park to meet several of my Mommy’s friends.  I had to ride in something called a travel crate! It was not as nice as a lap but it sure beat the smuggler’s bag!  And when I got to the park, they insisted on playing a game called, “Pass the Puppy.” Everyone wanted to hold me! Whew! I finally got back to Mommy’s lap and I settled down. She promised not to make me share any more strange laps for the rest of the day.

I went to see Dr. Szabo. He is a veterinarian. He poked and prodded me and then gave me a bunch of treats. He has nice treats, so I would not mind seeing him again. Oh, and I weighed a whole 12.9 lbs. (5.85 kg.). See, I am a truly BIG dog!

Today is Thanksgiving, a holiday in the States. We are supposed to think of things for which to be thankful. Like, Mommy and Daddy’s three grandkids. Only, I see them as “The Three Problems”: Loud, Louder and Loudest! And they all wanted to pet the new puppy (Me!). I really wanted nothing to do with them. Mommy made them line up and take turns petting me so I would not be so frightened.  Everything was better then! Mommy held me securely in her lap while they touched me. All in all, it was a good day. I even got a bite of turkey! Yum!

I tried drinking out of Mommy’s cup. She was drinking sweet tea. I thought it was really tasty I also tried Dr. Pepper, but I like tea better.

I am resting! Killing lots of prey animals every single night wears me out! You are seeing my dead lobster and dead squirrel. Just out of view are the bodies of a fox, an otter, a lizard and an octopus.

Today, the youngest of “The Three Problems” had a birthday party! And I got to go! So, I got packed into the travel crate to go to her party! It was not fun! What was fun was chasing the three kids around the house! They did not like being chased! So, I was put back into the travel crate! And then the mother of the Three Problems had to hold me! Bonkers! I was glad to get home.

I went with my parents to visit an elderly lady who is bedridden. She even let me get in the bed beside her. Boy, did I feel special! And she said I made her feel good, too.

December 9, 2021
Mommy and Daddy took me out to eat with them at their favorite Mexican restaurant! I scored a choice bit of steak, too!  Oh, and in the middle of the meal, I let out a really loud bark just because I could!  I wanted everyone to know I was there! And they did!!! Lol!

I do not like the flooring that Mommy and Daddy have selected for the downstairs bathroom. It is UGLY! They even have said that they need to replace it.  So, I decided to help them with the tear-down. I ripped up a good sized chuck of it!  For some reason, they did not seem pleased!

December 12, 2021
Today I got to explore the backyard! I had to go by myself, with just Daddy. Mommy says I am too little to play with my Great Aunt Tuuli.

December 13, 2021
Mommy gave me a bath today! She said my “wet dog smell” was rather raunchy.  The bath part was not too awful bad. I did not drown! But Mommy used a terrible machine that blows air on me ! It was loud and scary! I see no reason for baths! I would rather be smelly and have a distinctive odor.

December 15, 2021
I am beginning to grasp that it is not okay to bite Mommy! My sharp teeth hurt her hands! But now when she screams, I have learned to look very sorry. And I kiss her hands to make them “all better! “

December 16, 2021
I brought my flamingo to the watering hole with me! I thought the bird might like a drink, too!

December 17, 2021
Today, I woke up with a floppy ear! So, my Mommy glued my ears together! How embarrassing! I hope nobody sees me with glued ears! Oh, wait!…She took pictures!

December 20, 2021
I went back to visit Dr. Szabo. He is “Mr. Tasty Treats!” He gave me more shots! And more treats! Then, he weighed me. I am now 18.2 lbs. (8.255 kg.). See, now I really am a BIG SHOT! Whoo-hoo!

December 28, 2021
I went to a Mexican restaurant with Mommy and Daddy. I enjoyed the sweet tea and the chips but I passed on the salsa. Now I am ready for a siesta!
